WMIRA Championship Regatta, May 10

This week’s event is the WMIRA Championship Regatta, at Thompson Boat Center in Georgetown. The team will be racing a men’s varsity 8, a men’s varsity 4, and a women’s varsity 4. This is our only “local” regatta this year, so please encourage your friends and family to come to Georgetown to cheer you on.

All rowers are expected to stay for the entire regatta, as all of our boats will race in finals (be it in “finals” or “petites”) and we are responsible for assisting in clean-up of the boat house to fulfill our duties in co-hosting the regatta. Race times frequently run late, but the final race of the day is currently scheduled for 2:08 PM.

Please be sure to bring your varsity jacket or rugby shirt (if you have one) on Saturday as team photos will be taken at the conclusion of the regatta. Each rower should also bring sunscreen and a refillable bottle with him or her for water. Our water supply will be in large jugs rather than individual servings to minimize environmental impact.

There will be NO BUS TRANSPORTATION for this regatta and rowers are responsible for getting themselves to Thompson Boat House in advance of reporting times. Reporting times are as follows:

6:45 AM – All Coxswains (for 6:45 meeting at flagpole)

7:30 AM – All Varsity and Novice Men

8:45 AM – All Varsity and Novice Women

Race times are listed below. Please note that race times are always subject to change during the course of a regatta. Lane 1 is closest to the DC shore.

9:12 AM Men’s Varsity 8 (Lane 1) – heat

10:16 AM Women’s Varsity 4 (Lane 4) -heat

10:40 AM Men’s Varsity 4 (Lane 4) – heat

Depending on how our boats place in the heats, they will row in either the finals or the petites. Those racing times, again subject to change during the day, are as follows.

Men’s Varsity 8 – Final 1:28 PM, Petite 1:52 PM

Women’s Varsity 4 – Final 1:36 PM, Petite 2:08 PM

Men’s Varsity 4 – Final 1:44 PM, Petite 2:00 PM

Parking directions to the regatta are available on the directions page of Hoppercrew.com. The metered lot on Virginia Avenue behind Thompson will not be available for public parking during the regatta.

If you have a volunteer assignment for this weekend you should already have received an email from Volunteer Spot reminding you of your commitment. Remember that if at any time you wish to review your assignments, you may do so on the volunteers page of Hoppercrew.com.

Photos from the Smokey Jacobs Regatta and practice earlier this week are posted on the pictures page of the website. Thanks to Katherine Samolyk (Michael’s mother) and Nilotpol Mitra (Trino’s father) for taking the photos. If any parents or rowers have photos from the Al Urquia Regatta two weeks ago they would like to see posted, please put them on a memory stick and have your rower give them to Matthew.

One final note: the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure is also being held on Saturday morning. Road closures may affect your approach to Georgetown so before heading out please check this link kindly provided by Chris Foley (Chris’s father).

See you on the Potomac and Go Hoppers!
