Practices, dinner, Occoquan Regatta

Hi All:

Below is information about the practice schedule, TEAM DINNER and our first REGATTA.

The practice schedule this week is Mon-Fri at TBC, 5:30-7:30am, with the bus leaving
GDS each day at 5:15am, all per usual.  Forecast for the week looks good, so the coaches hope to get all practices in.  Note:  The team is now having Wednesday practice as we have our first regatta this Saturday, April 15.

Please note:  WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE (ROWERS AND PARENTS ALIKE) TO BRING A WATER BOTTLE.  We will not be providing individual plastic water bottles at regattas. We will have several gallons jugs for re-fills as needed.  This will cut down substantially on waste and keeps the plastic water bottles from ending up in our lakes and rivers.

The team will load boats on Friday afternoon at 5pm.  Following boat loading, our first team dinner is being hosted by Bridget Dick’s family (thank you Bridget, Amy and Andrew).  Pizza, pasta, salad and drinks will be provided. Parents are welcomed to stop by for a drink and some food.  The Dick’s house is at 5126 Worthington Drive, Bethesda, Maryland.  We anticipate everyone arriving about 6:30 or so depending on how quickly boat loading goes.

Saturday the bus leaves GDS at 5:30am for the Darrell Winslow Regatta at the Occoquan (Sandy Run State Park). The coaches & coxes meeting starts at 7:00am, with the racing schedule starting at 9:00am and running until 3 or 4.  Breakfast food will be dropped off shortly after the team arrives at the regatta site. Lunch will be dropped off around 11:00 a.m. or so.  It may be chilly Saturday morning.  Rowers should dress in layers and bring a blanket or sleeping bag to use in the tents if they want.

We do not yet have races times yet for our events. I will send out an email later in the
week when that information is available.  The team will go on the bus from the Occoquan back to TBC to unload and re-rig boats.  It is anticipated the team will be done by about
6:00 p.m. at TBC, and bus to GDS by 6:30pm. Parents can pick up kids at TBC after we’re
done re-rigging.

Rowers, IMPORTANT NOTE:  You MUST sign your emailed USRowing Waivers by the end-of-the-day on MONDAY.  Check your GDS SCHOOL emails for a request for you to do this; Here’s a tutorial if you need further guidance.

PARENTS:  Important information regarding the
Darrell Winslow Regatta.  It is at
Sandy Run Regional Park,
10450 Thompson Road,
Fairfax Station, VA.
The website for the regatta site is
https://www.novaparks.com/parks/sandy-run-regional-park.
Directions are on the HopperCrew website.

Two things about this venue.

First, it is a great place to watch the regatta
with grandstand seating with a nice view of the course.  The seating area is a hilly, wooded walk from where we set up the tent, so wear your walking shoes.

Second, parking is at the entrance to the park (paid, cash only, usually around $15), with a
shuttle bus to the regatta.  Please factor this in timewise.

If you are bringing food (breakfast or lunch) let them know you are just dropping off.  You can drive down, drop off and then park.  Please call me on my cell phone
to help with the food at the regatta site.  202-904-4025.   For those of you new to crew,
our tent will have food (breakfast and lunch) for rowers and spectators.

VOLUNTEERS:  You will be receiving instructions and reminders on your volunteer duties from Amy and Andrew Dick (Volunteer Coordinator) and Sue Burnett (Food Coordinator).  Questions can go to me or either Coordinator.

Have a great week.  Hope to see many of you Friday night at dinner and Saturday
at the regatta.

Volunteering…

Dear Hopper Crew Parents,

At our parent meeting for the season start, we
asked parents of each rower to volunteer for
3 jobs. Since that time, we have had to make
updates and changes to our volunteer system.

As a result, we must ask parents once again to
look over and to select three volunteer jobs
they can fill in April and May. We apologize
for any inconvenience this may cause.

Andrew and Amy Dick
Volunteer Coordinators

ACTION ITEM: Please use the following links to
sign up for 3 jobs by Wednesday, April 12.

Saturday April 15 Darrell Winslow Regatta on the
Occoquan, Sandy Run Regional Park

Also, we need families to host a team dinner on
the Friday night before a regatta. Hosting a
team dinner does not count as one of parents
three mandatory team jobs. We hope you’ll
volunteer anyway as these gatherings build
team spirit

Packing List for Camp Bob

Here is a list of things to bring with you to Camp Bob Cooper.

  • BOTH bedding for a twin bed, ie sheets, pillow, blanket, AND a sleeping bag.
  • Towel(s), toiletries
  • Clothes for hanging out, for 4 days. Weather is likely to be cool at night. Can’t hurt to bring an extra pillow case! or bag for dirty laundry.
  • Rowing clothes for various weather. Bring at least two sets of workout clothes, so one can be drying in the shower while you’re rowing in another set.  (I recommend re-using some of your rowing clothes, but if you want to schlep ten sets of rowing clothes with you, I won’t say no.) Remember basics of rowing wear: inner layer, midweight middle layer for colder weather, rain/wind jacket, hat, shorts that will not get caught in the slide’s wheels, tights or running pants for colder weather, and slides or cheap sandals for walking on the docks.
  • Make sure to bring your RUNNING SHOES in case the weather turns bad.
  • 4-6 plastic coat hangers to hang up wet rowing clothes to dry out. Camp Bob does have laundry facilities, so that is good news. Ideally, we (ie the team) should bring a few drying racks to set up in our rooms. We will not need one per rower; if we each bring 4-6 coat hangers and collectively we have 2-3 drying racks for the whole team, we should be fine.
  • ID, either student ID or driver’s license
  • Bug spray
  • GDS team clothes
  • Water bottle, ideally with your name on it
  • Things to take care of blisters
  • Cell phones & charger, even though service is limited
  • Reading material, homework, games, diversions, etc. – for the bus and down time. Rowers should also bring snacks for the bus and money for a stop on the way down and the way back.
  • Spending money? You won’t need much, as we don’t plan to go offsite. I understand Camp Bob sells Camp Bob T-shirts, and you might want an extra snack on the bus trips, but even that will be optional, as we’ll have a lunch packed for us for the way down and the way back. Maybe $20-30?
  • Anyone with medication should make sure to bring it and make sure a medication plan is in place with GDS.

Anticipated departure time is by 1:00 p.m. from GDS. The rowers will be returning to GDS on Wednesday, March 29th, hopefully by 5:00 p.m.

Feb 6 letter from Kathy Hudson (includes Calendar)

Dear Parents and Rowers,

On behalf of the school and the athletic department, we want to share some very exciting news about the upcoming crew season! Thanks to some hard work fundraising over the past few years and a very generous donation from the Forman family, we will be purchasing a new, stern-coxed four in time for the 2017 season. The GDS crew program will now have two 8s and two 4s to use at practice and regattas. Our expanded fleet will make a huge difference in our preparation for races, as we’ll now be able to race each other in practice on a daily basis.

The coaching staff is very excited about this opportunity. Speaking of coaching staff, we are very excited that Alan will be returning as head coach and to work with the men’s varsity team; Josh is also returning as the women’s varsity team head coach.

Joining us this year will be Kyle Pepin, who rowed in high school and at Michigan Technological University and will serve GDS as head coach of novices. And we are lucky to have assisting with all of the programs Patrick Lally, who has over 30 years of rowing experience. Finally, Paul will continue to coordinate crew logistics.

We have a lot of exciting opportunities on the water this year.

  • We’ll go on our second annual spring break trip to Camp Bob. Athletes will depart for this trip at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 24 and return around 5:00 p.m. on the 29. We will be sending an information packet on this trip out in the near future.
  • On Saturday, April 22, we’ll have the chance to give back to the community by participating in the Anacostia Community Boathouse Association’s annual shoreline clean up morning, ahead of an exciting scrimmage with Holton, Holy Cross, Elizabeth Seaton, and Bishop Ireton.
  • The following weekend, we’ll participate for the first time in the Maryland State Rowing Championships, taking our first strokes ever on the Chester River on Sunday, April 30.
  • The WMIRA Novice Regatta will be on Saturday, May 6, on the Anacostia, and the WMIRA League Championships will take place on the Potomac on Saturday, May 13, giving the GDS community a great opportunity to see us in action.
  • And our varsity season will again conclude with Hoppers rowing at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia.  [May 18 – 20]

In short, we are very excited about the upcoming crew season!

Also, don’t miss the mandatory crew pre-season meeting on Tuesday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Internet Cafe. All new and returning rowers and one parent/guardian should plan to attend to meet the coaches and get information about the season. For more information, please contact Lisa Kleine.

Thank you for your hard work making GDS Crew the embodiment of a small, fierce group of competitive athletes. Beware Hoppers on the water!

Sincerely,

Kathy Hudson
